Artisan, Alexey Pergamenshik
Sculptor Alexey Pergamenshik was just 25 years old when he
executed his sculptures for Kashtanova Alleya. Born in 1978 in
Myrgorod, Ukraine, he was the son of a scientist who moved the
family to Kyiv shortly afer his birth. After the fall of the Soviet Union,
the teenage Alexey studied computer graphics at Cantell School in
Southampton, UK, then sculpture and painting at Kent State University
in Ohio. Returning to Kyiv, he studied at the National Art School and
then joined the faculty of monumental sculpture of the National
Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (NAFAA).
In 2001, while still at the academy, he created a monument to the
Ukrainian marine painter Rufin Gabriel Sudkovskiy (1850-1885) for
the National Artist Union Creativity Center in Ochkiv, Ukraine. In 2002,
he completed his studies and became a member of the National Artist
Union in his own right. The following year, with the masterful sculptures
for Kashtanova Alleya to his credit, he was back at NAFAA, this time to
teach. Now he works out of his own studio in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Department of Glass,
L’viv National Academy of Arts
The L’viv National Academy of Arts represents one of the more interesting and innovative directions in the development of the higher education in Ukraine: it provides professional training of artists and other creative professionals in the areas of decorative and applied arts, design, restoration, cultural studies, art studies,
and art facility management. The idea of establishing an art academy in L’viv goes back to the middle of the nineteenth century, and thus today’s academy has inherited the best traditions and legacies of art education that are more than hundred years old.
L’viv National Academy of Arts is a post-secondary institution of the fourth level of accreditation. It was officially opened in 1946 and now includes five faculties, a research department, a division of graduate
studies (Master’s and PhD programs), a scientific library, a museum, a gallery of contemporary art, a publishing house, and various production shops. The development and success of today’s Academy is
based on active collaboration with other post-secondary institutions in the context of European educational integration; these include well-known art academies and institutes of Poland, France, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, the Baltic states, and Russia.
The Department of Glass is housed in the Faculty of Decorative and Applied Arts of the L’viv National Academy of Arts. It is the only post-secondary department in Ukraine that trains professionals with the specialization in decorative glass, which includes creative, pedagogical, and research areas. The Academy’s famous tradition of glass-working started as an experiment in 1961, when a small program in decorative “plastics and glass” was opened. The magnetism and appeal of the art of glass stimulated further interest
in the program and favored the broadening of its creative and instructional range: the academic year of
1963/64 ended in the establishment of the current department of decorative glass as an independent unit
of the Academy.
